In-Stock Medium Voltage Dry Type Transformers

Our stock medium voltage transformers can handle the most common power requirements for various industrial and commercial applications. We maintain in-stock units from 500 to 3,750 kVA with primary voltage options of 2400, 4160, 12470, 13200 and 13800 volts. These dry type units use air circulation to cool the coils and windings, making them perfect for most indoor installations where you need clean, quiet operation without potential fire hazards.

Each ELSCO medium voltage dry type transformer features advanced technology and materials that set it apart from basic units. We build every transformer with 100% copper windings, round coil construction and mitered cores that run at lower flux densities for better efficiency. Thanks to excellent thermal stability, flame resistance and mechanical toughness, the high-grade Nomex insulation enhances safety, reduces transmission losses and helps lower overall operating costs.

Our medium voltage dry type units deliver high efficiency that meets Energy Star and Department of Energy (DOE) standards while meeting the latest National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) requirements. Most facilities install our dry types indoors because the non-flammable insulation provides the high flashpoint protection you need for maximum safety.

How We Build Our Medium Voltage Dry Type Transformers

Using the highest-quality materials can be the difference between a transformer that lasts over 35 years and one that fails in half that time. We utilize copper for both high- and low-voltage windings because it conducts better than aluminum, handles short circuits more effectively and lasts longer under stress. Our insulation has the highest temperature class materials rated up to 200 degrees Celsius, including DuPont Nomex throughout the coil assembly.

We build each dry type transformer by hand rather than using automated equipment or assembly lines. Our technicians hand-wind each coil and inspect every step of the process to ensure consistent tightness and maintain proper clearances for cooling. This attention to detail enables us to manufacture transformers that run cooler, quieter and longer than units that are mass-produced.

We test each unit five times during construction — after winding the low voltage, again after the high voltage, once more after core stacking, after welding the bus bars and finally after the varnish curing process. Our transformers consistently test around 0.3% power factor, well below the 1% industry requirement.

Medium Voltage Retrofit Dry Type Transformers and Custom Bus Work

When your old transformer fails or your power needs change, a retrofit often makes more sense than a complete system overhaul. Retrofitting means modifying an in-stock unit to meet your application’s needs, saving significant time over manufacturing a new custom unit while still giving you a transformer that fits your existing space and connects to your current electrical infrastructure.

Common reasons for retrofitting include transformers reaching the end of their service life, increased capacity requirements, damage from natural disasters and problems from electrical overloading or harmonics. Rather than reworking all your connections and possibly rebuilding the enclosures, retrofitting lets you replace the unit without the delays and costs of starting from scratch.

Custom bus work solves the connection challenges that come with many transformer upgrades. Based on your drawings or the manufacturer’s specifications, we fabricate the bus work to line up perfectly with your facility’s existing gear and ship it with your transformer for a seamless plug-and-play installation. This service saves money by reusing existing hardware, simplifies installation by eliminating connection rework and reduces upgrade costs compared to entire system overhauls.
